In Geneva in the fall of 1877, a small painting is on view under a single word: "Despair." It shows the face of a young man, eyes wide open, hands in his hair—painted thirty years earlier by a beginner, submitted by a gravely ill exile. In this episode, we look behind the work to discover how Gustave Courbet painted himself in a panic at twenty-five, why a toppled monument drove him into exile, and how this face now travels the world as a meme.
