Il revient sur son enfance dans une grande famille, marquée notamment par la présence de deux paires de jumeaux, les chicanes familiales et une dynamique aussi drôle que chaotique. Jean-Michel aborde aussi son rapport à l’école, où il admet avoir été un élève difficile, multipliant les changements d’établissement, ainsi que son amour pour la langue française et son identité linguistique, en distinguant notamment le créole haïtien. Il se confie également sur les relations parentales après un divorce, la proximité parfois intense entre une mère et son fils, et son désir éventuel d’avoir des enfants. Le tout donne lieu à une conversation à la fois sincère, drôle et profondément humaine.
