Most of us think of gossip as something malicious. However, for centuries, gossip had no negative connotation. A woman's \"gossip\" were her close friends, and female friendships were a form of social power that gave women's lives fulfillment and security.
It all became topsy turvy in the 16th century, when the church combined forces with labour guilds (you'll see what I mean). That's when gossip became demonized into something malicious, aggressive, and bitchy. Because patriarchy and early capitalism needed quiet, subservient women in order to function.
