What if a group of people trying to contact the dead ended up making contact with something else entirely?
In the 1990s, four people gathered in the pitch-black cellar of a 17th-century English farmhouse and began conducting what would become known as the Scole Experiment. Over five years and more than 500 séances, they claimed to witness lights moving intelligently through the darkness, disembodied voices, objects appearing out of nowhere, and messages materializing on sealed rolls of photographic film that had never been placed in a camera.
Then things got even stranger.
A team of psychical researchers, including a professor of electrical engineering, investigated the claims. An engineer brought his own film, his own locked container, and a setup he personally controlled. According to the investigators, unexplained images still appeared. The group also built a homemade communication device from a circuit diagram allegedly received from the spirit of Thomas Edison.
But the most disturbing development came when the group began experimenting with video feedback. In April 1998, a session produced an image the group interpreted as a face belonging to something nonhuman. They called it Blue.
Was the Scole Experiment evidence of life after death, an elaborate deception, or something that investigators simply couldn't explain?
In Part One, we're going inside the Scole Hole to follow the experiment from its earliest manifestations to the moment something appeared to look back.
The lights are off. Let's see what was waiting in the dark.
