Deep in the woods of Prince George’s County, Maryland, there’s a legend about a creature that stalks the back roads, screams in the darkness, and carries an axe. They call him the Goatman.
But the real story behind one of America’s most infamous cryptids might be stranger than the monster itself.
Our investigation begins in November 1971, when a puppy named Ginger was found decapitated near a railroad track in Old Bowie, Maryland. Her family blamed the Goatman, and a local rumor suddenly became front-page news. But the legend was already taking shape months earlier, and the original accounts describe something very different from the half-human, half-goat monster we know today.
This week on Paranormal Directive 13, we trace the Goatman’s evolution from a mysterious local hermit to an axe-wielding cryptid. We investigate the alleged government genetic experiments at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, the infamous claim that the Goatman murdered fourteen hikers in 1962, and the connections to Maryland’s haunted bridges, abandoned hospitals, and the legendary Bunnyman of Virginia.
Along the way, we uncover how newspaper headlines, teenage pranks, urban legends, and an unlikely haunted house attraction helped build the monster’s modern mythology.
Was there ever something in those Maryland woods? Or did a series of strange events transform an ordinary local rumor into a legend that refuses to die?
The evidence tells a fascinating story. Whether it tells the whole story is another question.
Stay curious, and keep your eyes on the tree line.
