In 1977, a charismatic Seventh-day Adventist convert named Roch Thériault started calling himself Moïse, Moses, and convinced a group of young Quebecers to follow him into the wilderness to wait for the end of the world.
The apocalypse never came.
What came instead was twelve years of control, punishment, and “healing” rituals performed with no medical training, first on a Gaspé mountainside and later in the Kawarthas near Burnt River, Ontario.
This week, Chantal walks Ashley through the rise and fall of the Ant Hill Kids. We cover the death of a two-year-old, the system’s repeated failures to step in, the death of Solange Boilard on a kitchen table, and the courage of Gabrielle Lavallée, the survivor whose escape finally brought the prophet down.
