A new report has exposed the scale of the struggle facing people relying on the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP), with just 20 rental properties available within limits across 16 areas surveyed in June. Of those, 17 were located in Dublin, with no suitable properties found in 12 areas including Cork, Galway and Limerick.
The Simon Communities of Ireland says the findings show that HAP is failing many households on lower incomes, with people increasingly locked out of the private rental market. The organisation is calling for urgent reform and higher payment limits to reflect the reality of rising rents.
