Composers make movie magic happen… and, if we’re being totally honest, we have very little idea how that magic actually works.
So we’re bringing in someone who does.
Film composer Judith Moy joins us to talk about what actually goes into creating a score, how a composer finds the sound of a movie, and how music can completely change the way we experience a scene.
Judith composed the score for And Through the Portal We Go and has spent her career working across film and television, so we have A LOT of questions.
How do you turn an emotion into music? What does working with a director actually look like? How early does a composer get involved? And what do you do when a filmmaker says something incredibly helpful like, “Can you make it feel more… you know… sad?”
Judith Moy - Upon her move to Los Angeles, Judith spent a year working at Hans Zimmer and Sony/ATV’s Bleeding Fingers Music. Under the mentorship of Emmy-winning composer Denise Santos, she worked on projects including Eden: Untamed Planet (BBC) and Island Of The Sea Wolves (Netflix). She also contributed music to competition show Alone(History Channel) and Bleeding Fingers’ affiliated production library, Extreme Music. She has worked in music departments for productions including Best Foot Forward(AppleTV+), Organ Trail (Paramount), Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts (Paramount), Young Rock (NBC), and Boots (Netflix). Recently, Judith has worked under the mentorship of Nathan Matthew David on projects including Joy Ride (Lionsgate), Stephen Curry: Underrated (A24/AppleTV+), Diarra From Detroit (Paramount+), and The Brothers Sun(Netflix). Currently, she is working with Nathan on his score for the upcoming DreamWorks Animation film, Forgotten Island. Judith’s relationship with director Mike Hayhurst and Evening Squire Productions began while she was still an undergraduate at NYU with a 48 Hour Short Film challenge. In 2024, her fourth collaboration with Mike and her first original score for a feature film, And Through The Portal We Go, premiered and has since become available to stream on Amazon Prime.
