His career narrative is a story of resilience—transitioning from a career-ending industrial accident to becoming one of the most respected tactical minds in the sport.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><p>Born in Blaina, Gwent, in 1959, Ruddock was a formidable back-rower. He made over 120 appearances for <strong>Swansea RFC</strong>, scoring 43 tries and featuring in high-profile matches against major touring sides like Australia and the New Zealand Māoris.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><p>However, his playing days were cut short at age 25. While working as an electricity linesman in 1985, he suffered a horrific fall from a pole, resulting in a fractured skull and three compressed vertebrae. Refusing to leave the sport, he famously declared his intention to coach the Welsh national team while still in the hospital recovering.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Ruddock’s coaching path took him through the grassroots of Welsh rugby and the emerging professional scene in Ireland.</p><p><br></p><p>After a final stint as Performance Director for the <strong>Ospreys</strong>, Ruddock officially retired from professional rugby in 2024 at the age of 66.
