WHALEFALL Review: You Aren’t Prepared (Complimentary)
Nerdist’s review praises Whalefall as a genre-defying film that mixes existential meditation, body horror, camp, and father-son drama. Austin Abrams plays Jay Gardiner, who has an hour to escape a whale’s stomach while searching for his father’s remains. The reviewer singles out his performance, including a friendship with a bioluminescent jellyfish. Josh Brolin plays his difficult father in flashbacks. The review also praises the underwater cinematography and the well-timed humor, and it likes that the film doesn’t tie up the father-son story neatly. The reviewer calls it absurdist cinema and admits not fully knowing what to make of it, but enjoyed every minute. It opens October 16.
