In this two-part series, we see how Jesus did not call His followers to blend in, He called them to stand out. In the Sermon on the Mount, He declared that His disciples are the salt of the earth. These are not aspirational titles, they are statements of identity. But identity without expression is meaningless. Authentic Christianity is the visible expression of the inward rule of Christ, producing Christlike character, righteous living, and redemptive influence in the world. The question this sermon confronts is not whether we call ourselves Christians, but whether our lives reflect the character of Christ and bring His goodness and influence into the world.
