This week on In Love with the Process, Mike Pecci sits down with one of his favorite comic book artists and writers, Sean Murphy, the punk rock creative force behind Batman: White Knight, Punk Rock Jesus, Tokyo Ghost, The Wake, Joe the Barbarian, Chrononauts, Zorro: Man of the Dead, and more.
Sean's new book, The Last Driver, checks pretty much every box Mike has. Awesome cars. Anti tech rebellion. Big action. Incredible artwork. And cinematic storytelling designed in a widescreen format that practically feels like storyboards for the greatest action movie that hasn't been made yet.
The story takes place in a near future where a robotic transportation network called the GRID has made cars obsolete and illegal, until an outlaw named Clutch gets behind the wheel again. Image describes it as Escape from New York meets Vanishing Point, which should tell you immediately why Mike loves this thing.
But this conversation quickly becomes about something bigger.
Mike and Sean turn into two old guys sitting on a porch screaming into the darkness about modern cars, tech bros, subscriptions, automation, and a future where you might not actually own the things you buy.
They talk about the relationship between a driver and a great car, and why the automobile has become the modern equivalent of the cowboy's horse. Man and machine working together. Every vibration, rattle, bump, sound, and imperfection connecting you to the road and the world around you.
Because the ability to throw your shit in a car, turn the key, and drive wherever the hell you want represents something bigger: freedom.
This is a conversation about cars, comics, cinema, technology, action heroes, and fighting to preserve the things that make life tactile, imperfect, exciting, and human.
