In this talk, part of our January recap series, she explores how thinking like an urban anthropologist can transform the way we design, experience, and shape our cities. Katrina was named to the BBC’s 100 Women list (2019) for her advocacy for women and girls in urban environments. She is the co-founder of The Women Led Cities Initiative and focuses on direct observation—how people move through space, interact with the built environment, and connect with each other both physically and digitally. One of Katrina’s most striking points is that cities aren’t neutral; they carry implicit biases based on who has historically designed them. Because most urban design has been shaped by men, public spaces often reflect male-centric assumptions about movement, safety, and value. Katrina’s work asks: What happens when we intentionally design cities through a different lens? By understanding cities as habitats for our species, we can rethink urban planning, policy, and design to create cities that truly work for people. Wherever she goes, Katrina observes, questions, and studies human behaviour to better understand how cities shape our lives—and how we can shape them back. When we think of cities as habitats for humanity, they take on a whole new meaning. Would you agree?
