On November 12, 2024, Brandon Durham, a 43-year-old man, was fatally shot by police officer Alexander Bookman in Las Vegas after Durham called 911 to report a home invasion. Durham was at home with his 15-year-old daughter when he made the call, stating that two people were shooting into and attempting to break into his house. When police arrived, they found signs of damage and heard screaming and banging noises inside. Officer Bookman entered the house, saw Durham and a female intruder, Alejandra Boudreaux, struggling over a knife in a bedroom, and ordered them to drop the weapon. Almost immediately, Bookman shot Durham, who fell to the floor, and then fired five more shots at him. Durham was pronounced dead at the scene despite attempts to save his life. Boudreaux was taken into custody and faces multiple charges, including home invasion and assault. The investigation indicates that Durham and Boudreaux had a prior relationship and the break-in was not random. Officer Bookman has been placed on paid administrative leave. Durham's daughter expressed her disgust with the police, and a GoFundMe page has been set up for the family.
