This week’s theme is a little unhinged, and yes, we know ⅔ of the films also include Jake Gyllenhaal. Unfortunately, we couldn’t seem to find another one of his films on YouTube that fit the bill. If only Zodiac was plural! Before we dig into these films, we discuss some industry news and Hannah shares her thoughts on Jawbreaker, which is somewhat of a companion to Heathers. Speaking of Jake Gyllenhaal, the trailer for Remain dropped earlier this week. You might remember that we talked about this film months ago when we discovered that Remain was in development by M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Gyllenhaal as a romantic lead, but this film also seems to come with a twist.
Since Hannah also watched Jawbreaker this week, we started our themed discussion with Heathers. This is a classic 80s film and there are almost more quotable moments in this than there are in Mean Girls. Released in 1988, this has all the hallmarks of a beloved dark comedy. While Heathers depicts some heavy themes (suicide, bullying…), we never felt that the comedic way they were handled were distasteful, although we can’t imagine something like this being made today. Brothers comes next in 2009. This film shows some of the realities of war and how challenging things can be for military families. Considering this came out in the midst of the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars, we imagine this hit really hard when it was released. Tobey Mcguire shows a new side of himself here, and we felt the casting overall was really well done. Finally, we have Prisoners from 2013 by Denis Villeneuve. You may remember that we watched Incendies by Villeneuve last week, and this film was another one that really sticks with you after watching. We see a very scary version of Hugh Jackman here and we were left guessing pretty much up until the end. Thank goodness Jake was here to save the day in both films!
