Paul Thomas Anderson won big at last weekend’s Oscars with One Battle After Another. To celebrate this, we decided this week’s theme should explore some films from his career! Before we dive into that, we recap some highlights from the Oscar ceremony and talk about some of the big winners. Ailish also shared some industry news and both of us gave our takes on Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride!. While we weren’t overly enthusiastic about this film as a whole, we did appreciate the creativity and the idea of new ideas coming to the big screen.
We began our PTA theme with Boogie Nights. It’s honestly difficult to believe that he wrote and directed this when he was about 26 because it’s such an impressive film. We love Mark Wahlberg in this and wish he did more films with this kind of energy. Magnolia is a film that we had both heard a lot about, especially after the release of Weapons. This is an example of a lot going on at the same time, but the way it’s all presented and how it comes together makes it effective and allows things to become more clear. Tom Cruise is everything in this and it makes us excited for Digger later this year. Unfortunately, Licorice Pizza did not work for us. The age-gap romance was disturbing to us and the overall film didn’t flow like we’d hoped.
