This week, we’re celebrating Black History Month with Black Stories Part 2. We really have a great mix of genres and vibes here that made this week a fun one. Before we dug into our theme, Hannah shared her thoughts on her rewatch of Marie Antoinette and The Shape of Water. We also talked a little bit about our Oscar predictions after the BAFTAs, and talked about some of the criticisms of Sirat and our feelings on the film.
Moving into Black Stories Part 2, we started with Get Out. This is a pretty iconic film that uses the horror genre to dive into some heavy discussions on race. We agreed this was our second favorite Jordan Peele film with Us being our top pick. How Stella Got Her Groove Back is a fun, romantic film that tries to send your emotions on a roller coaster. Whoopi Goldberg is shining in yet another supporting role, and it’s hard to deny the sheer beauty of Angela Bassett and Taye Diggs on screen.Our last two films of the week are pretty heavy. The Butler tackles the struggles that Black Americans have faced for decades and shows two different perspectives between generations. The heavy themes and visuals make this one a difficult watch at times, but we felt it would have been stronger if the focus was primarily on the Cecil character. Finally, we have Moonlight. What more can we say about his gut wrenching film? Some criticisms of this one say the main character lacks depth, but we feel the exact opposite and love how he is portrayed through the three stages of the film.
