What priorities should guide Nebraska’s Legislature as lawmakers face budget pressures, rising property taxes and questions about the future of public services?
As part of The Dan Parsons Show’s special election series, Road to the Legislature, Democratic challenger Christy Knorr joins Dan Parsons to discuss her campaign for Nebraska Legislative District 12 in the Omaha area, where she is challenging incumbent State Senator Merv Riepe.
A hospice nurse who grew up in public housing and relied on public assistance, Knorr says she wants to bring the perspective of working- and middle-class families to the Legislature. She discusses state spending, property tax relief, medical cannabis and the importance of following through on measures approved by Nebraska voters.
In this conversation:
• Why Knorr is running and how her personal experiences shape her priorities
• Nebraska’s budget challenges and where she would look to eliminate waste
• Property tax relief, including expanding the homestead exemption
• Medical cannabis and potential revenue for the state
• Whether lawmakers should respect voter-approved ballot initiatives
• Where she agrees and disagrees with incumbent Senator Merv Riepe
• Her goals for public education, social programs and free school lunches
Senator Merv Riepe was also invited to participate in this conversation but was unable to join the show.
