For eleven years he has driven piles into the Mississippi as the second man on somebody else's rig. When a mining company offers him a hammer of his own, the work is seven weeks from Earth, inside a dead creature the size of a moon. Night crews drive bronze wedges into its copper veins, and what boils out is a metal purer than any furnace at home could make.
He loves those nights alone in the dark with the hammer finally in his hands. Yet the men who vanish in the galleries are never brought home, and the carcass shrinks a little every time its veins are drawn. The company cares only that the metal keeps coming.
Then a new engineer arrives with a rush order and picks him to open the largest vein in the creature, one no one has ever dared to tap. It is everything he crossed the solar system for, and taking it means ignoring every sign of what the giant does with the men who die inside it.
