For six hundred years, the dead of a generation ship have been given to the distance.
The ship's sexton has spent three decades washing bodies, sewing shrouds, and sending them into the dark. Then the number on an ancient navigation slate begins to fall. A piece of forgotten debris is drawing nearer, though neither ship nor object has accelerated.
What the aft lenses reveal is worse: every corpse and scrap ever cast behind the ship is still there, packed into a vast drifting wake. Old broadcasts begin returning in reverse. Space itself seems to be folding toward the stern. Soon the rituals that have kept nine thousand people sane collide with fear, superstition, and the impossible question of what the dead are becoming.
As the distance continues to vanish, the sexton must decide whether burial is still an act of mercy, or whether opening the final door means delivering the dead into something waiting just beyond the hull.
