On a planet locked in a two-hundred-year winter, eleven hundred survivors depend on a deep thermal bore for heat. When instruments detect an impossible warm zone far beyond the city's thermal radius, David Corbett is sent with four others to investigate. They find preserved forests, abandoned settlements that survived far longer than official history admits, and a valley where the air itself is warm enough to breathe.
But the valley is changing faster than it should. Ancient terraforming machinery is running again. Vegetation spreads by the hour. The missing colonists left no bodies, and members of the survey team begin to sleep better, hear things no one else can, and question whether they want to go home.
David has spent his life serving a system that turns human beings into energy. In the valley, he finds a possible escape from that brutality, and evidence that everything his city believes about survival may be a lie. To bring the truth home, he first has to learn what the warmth is doing to the people who enter it.
