Paul Denny is surveying a dead Cold War station when his radar finds rows of soldiers standing upright beneath the ice, wired to machines that should have failed decades ago.
The buried facility belonged to Project Vernal, a classified military experiment designed to freeze human beings without extinguishing awareness. The bodies below have no heartbeat, circulation, or measurable brain activity. Yet some of the men are still conscious, and after Paul restores power, one of them begins speaking through an ancient terminal.
Then the signals start doing something the machinery was never built to allow. When damaged connections fail, the trapped consciousnesses do not disappear. They move deeper.
With the glacier crushing the installation and a military response team closing in, Paul and a signals engineer descend through sealed laboratories, abandoned subjects, and increasingly impossible transmissions. What began as proof of a horrific Cold War experiment becomes evidence that the project may have discovered something far older beneath the ice, and that the frozen men were never simply being preserved.
