Six-man survey team crosses a Magellan Gate expecting a lightly settled alien world. Instead they emerge onto a rust-colored Earth scattered with abandoned expedition camps, each carrying insignia from governments and organizations that have never existed. The gate will not send them home, the corrosive atmosphere is eating through their equipment, and every set of footprints leading underground ends the same way: none come back.
Beneath the surface, Sergeant Kearney finds a civilization descended from stranded travelers. Blind, altered, and terrifyingly organized, its inhabitants have spent generations preserving fragments of gate technology they no longer fully understand. Now they have captured working hardware, learned to use human voices as keys, and are closing in on the one barrier keeping them from the wider network.
With supplies failing and the gate finally offering a path home, Kearney faces a choice every expedition before his may have made. Escape and hope someone else contains the threat, or make certain this Earth never opens another door.
