Ray Dunford knows the Kelvin-3 drill has one dangerous flaw: its sensors understand Nevada geology, not an alien world. Procurement says the software update can wait eleven weeks. Buried beneath Outpost Zero, something has already waited much longer.
When Ray and three crewmates cut into a miles-long metallic structure under the glacier, they find corridors lined with impossible bodies, precise industrial hardware, and a power network wired through the walls. Then the mining software makes the worst possible mistake. The buried system begins to wake.
Heat tears through the frozen structure. The hull repairs itself. The glacier above starts to fail. With an injured crew, a storm closing in, and rescue more than twenty hours away, Ray has to do what he has always done: read the machinery faster than it can kill him.
But this machine was built for a purpose, and the thing it is powering lies deeper inside.
