Flight neuropsychologist Dr. Hale chose the crew, and now he is the only person who knows them well enough to tell one mind from another. The recovery team can extract each surviving personality from Commander Jack Weston and transfer it into a cloned body. Hale has one job: authenticate the man before the procedure begins.
But every extraction makes the minds left inside Weston harder to separate. Memories migrate. Childhoods change owners. Men wake with pieces of lives they never lived, while the boundaries between the remaining identities begin to collapse. Then Hale finds signatures that belong to no one on the crew manifest.
With military officials demanding results and families waiting for husbands and fathers to return, Hale must decide what counts as proof of a person when memory, personality, and even grief can be copied. Because if something else crossed the Singularity Engine with the crew, the safest way out may be to become indistinguishable from the people it studied.
