At the edge of chartered space, twelve living gates are dying one by one around a dimensional rupture. The Bio-Industrial Splicer assigned to keep them alive is running out of replacement tissue, time, and any realistic hope that the overdue supply convoy will arrive.
Then something crosses the rupture.
The first organisms seem almost helpful. They seal leaks, rebuild damaged vessels, and imitate repairs they have witnessed. But every tool, scrap of tissue, and procedure near the breach teaches them more. Soon the station is filling with an alien maintenance ecology that can keep the gates alive while quietly remaking the structure from the inside.
With supplies collapsing and a debt contract still binding him to the job, the splicer faces a brutal engineering problem: destroy the intruders and risk losing containment, or depend on a biology that learns from everything it touches. As the station begins treating bodies as just another maintenance resource, keeping the rupture closed may demand a kind of repair no human manual was ever meant to authorize.
