For twenty years, survey cartographer Mark has mapped structures that stay where he leaves them. The Dyson sphere does not.
His five-person crew is hired to chart the largest artificial structure ever found, a silent alien shell whose corridors are threaded with stresses only Mark's Barycentric Loom can see. The contract is supposed to make his career. Then a routine sample is removed from a wall, gravity vanishes, and the architecture folds itself around one of them.
Mark discovers the sphere is not collapsing. It is balancing. Every gram moved, lost, consumed, or spilled forces the structure to redistribute mass, and the deeper the crew travels, the smaller the margin for error becomes. Their route home is already changing behind them.
With a damaged suit in the team, a human-built instrument pushed past its calibration, and a company briefing that suddenly looks dangerously incomplete, Mark must guide the remaining crew through corridors no map can hold still long enough to describe. In a structure where a misplaced ration can become a death sentence, survival depends on knowing exactly what everything weighs, including the cost of being wrong.
