Captain Rylan’s war machine is grown from the flesh of the enemy, and something inside it is listening.
Humanity’s buried Trench-Cities survive behind open rifts the rock-boring Ossivores cannot cross. Beyond those rifts, Marrow Engines, steel frames wrapped in cultivated enemy muscle, are the only weapons powerful enough to hold the tunnels. Their neural interfaces let veteran pilots feel movement through solid stone.
Then Trench-City Macon goes dark. Rylan leads four machines through three hundred kilometers of hostile rock to recover a classified research program from the ruins. The Ossivores no longer attack like animals. They isolate pilots, destroy infrastructure in sequence, and ignore easy prey to hunt the mechs first. Worse, the living tissue inside Rylan’s machine is pulling him toward something deep beneath the dead city.
To learn how the enemy is finding them, Rylan must follow that signal into the dark. What waits below could explain the war’s sudden turn, but the truth may leave humanity with no weapon it can safely use.
