A black biological mass washes ashore in a Maine lobster town, and everyone it contaminates begins to harden from the inside while remaining fully conscious.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Jason Myers is assigned to guard the quarantine wire around Harrow Neck. At first, the operation looks like a routine federal containment response. Then he finds living gulls frozen in rigid bodies, residents whose bones are turning dense as iron, and sealed laboratories filled with people who can still see, feel, and suffer.
The scientists in charge are not searching for a cure. They are measuring the transformation, drilling samples from immobilized subjects, and protecting a discovery they consider more valuable than the lives trapped inside it. When Jason learns that a local fisherman is next in line, obedience is no longer an option.
To get one man out, Jason must break the cordon he helped build, turn against his command, and cross a shoreline watched by armed guards. But Harrow Neck is already changing beneath his feet, and the price of understanding the truth may be far greater than his career.
