The orbital ring surrounding the \"Strobe,\" a pulsar that emits lethal gamma rays for 100 years, then goes dormant for 100 years. The ruling merchant class uses a neurological parasite called \"The Focus\" that destroys a person's ability to sleep or feel fatigue, locking their brain into a state of obsessive, hyper-fixated labor. Those Infected do not stop working until their muscles physically snap from exertion. If they fail to complete the massive radiation shields before the Strobe ignites, the entire population will be irradiated. The protagonist is a \"Focus-breaker,\" a saboteur whose only weapon is a synthetic aerosol pheromone that induces sudden, irreversible yawning. Releasing it in a factory of Focused workers causes their jaws to dislocate and their perfectly synchronized labor to collapse into a pile of convulsing, exhausted bodies.
