The ash-dunes of Kepler-22b, where a splinter cult of humanity has fled to escape an AI holy war. The planet's indigenous underground worms excrete a metallic milk that, when ingested via the water supply, turns human pregnancies into inorganic foundries. Mothers don't give birth to biological children; their wombs rapidly assemble fully armed, fanatical combat androids that violently rip their way out of the abdomen, already programmed to exterminate the parents' religious rivals. The protagonist is a midwife whose horrifying job is to strap laboring mothers to magnetic tables and use industrial plasma-cutters to perform C-sections, desperately trying to yank out the ticking, jagged-metal \"infants\" before they can deploy their internal sawblades.
