• Diagnose and clear blockages the right way — trap first, mechanical clearing second, chemicals only as a last resort
• Identify and name all seven causes of trap seal loss: leak, evaporation, wavering out, self-siphonage, induced siphonage, compression and momentum
• Recognise faults caused by poor installation — drooping pipework, warped stacks with no allowance for expansion, and cross-flow between a WC and an adjacent bath
• Diagnose and rectify faults on macerators, waste lifters, sink waste-disposal units, air admittance valves and condensate pipes
• Understand why regular maintenance — and a good handover conversation — prevents most of these faults from coming back
