If one person has it, 9 out of 10 unvaccinated people near the infected person will get measles. The virus can remain in the air and on surfaces around an infected person for up to 2 hours after they leave an area. The contagious period for measles (the time in which it can pass from person to person) ranges from 4 days before through 4 days after the measles rash starts.
