The Toronto Maple Leafs drop their third straight game, falling 4-1 to the New York Islanders in another frustrating performance at Scotiabank Arena! Zack Phillips is live for another edition of Leafs Nation After Dark to break down Toronto's offensive struggles, continued defensive concerns, and the mounting pressure on Jim Hiller as the Maple Leafs fall to 3-4-2 through their first nine games of the 2026-27 NHL season.
Despite outshooting the Islanders 29-20, Toronto struggled to generate consistent offence against Ilya Sorokin, who turned aside 28 shots. Anthony Duclair opened the scoring, Bo Horvat doubled New York's lead late in the second period, and Simon Holmstrom scored twice in the third to seal the victory. Colton Sissons provided the Maple Leafs' lone goal, with Easton Cowan and Troy Stecher picking up assists, while Toronto's power play finished 0-for-3.
One of the biggest storylines remains Gavin McKenna and his relationship with head coach Jim Hiller following Thursday's controversial benching against Buffalo. After the two addressed the situation publicly ahead of tonight's game, how did McKenna respond against the Islanders? Zack examines his performance, his opportunity on the top power-play unit, and the ongoing debate surrounding his development and usage.
Plus, Zack breaks down Auston Matthews and William Nylander's performances, Sergei Bobrovsky allowing three goals on 19 shots, and Toronto's struggles generating offence without John Tavares. With Tavares and Chris Tanev both sidelined week-to-week, can the Maple Leafs find answers before their early-season struggles become an even bigger problem?
We'll also discuss Hiller's handling of the lineup, the performances of Toronto's young players, the reaction surrounding the team, and what needs to change as the Leafs look to snap their losing streak.
