There are remarkably few known facts about this woman, but that has never stopped myths, ideas, imagery and music to evolve around her as a core element of the story of Christianity, and ultimately Western then global culture.</p><p><br></p><p>In this last episode of our summer season of women authors, we discuss the evolution and significance of&nbsp;<em>Mary, Mother of God: The History of the Virgin Mary</em>&nbsp;with its author, Professor Miri Rubin. One of the most noted historians of the medieval and early modern periods, she helps us discover the many roads the idea of Mary has travelled, as well as a broader discussion on the Middle Ages and ideas of religion. A great conversation ranging from the first century AD to the late Dolly Parton!</p><p><br></p><p>This episode was recorded on 27 August 2026</p><p><br></p><p><strong>Chapters</strong></p><p><br></p><ul><li>Miri Rubin's background and journey into medieval history</li><li>Mary's centrality in Christian theology and practice</li><li>Mary's role as a vessel in religious stories</li><li>Mary in contemporary culture and popular media</li><li>The relevance of medieval history and Mary today</li></ul><p><br></p><p><strong>Mentions</strong></p><p><br></p><ul><li>Book - Mother of God: A History of the Virgin Mary:&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mother-God-History-Virgin-Mary/dp/0300105002/ref=sr_1_4?crid=NL55SFLRZ1PW&amp;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.Ae6zoaVxWz8Q2wSSK6Lb3qMMg9kfz46dkReCX6SaLy-38Sk2d5FNdQ5ZyPaSFZftfEmVALDf2sadgoWgon73ld2PNfkLxG2QmnovKrgmZlhOpxC3TAzWk4b5YzP68ry0k5KwZOHn10BytzsimXOxQDi-hnAfzKfj1xYTuzO8XyV8eDEyfePofv5z8qQ4Uxs5mPvhpMscinvMH5k-XVtSGnwkxkXRYth3Fkz0wB91-_o.JmO-M6_nG9hCVwsCmwCJVydiMONQzxJHrfiY9XYfD0k&amp;dib_tag=se&amp;keywords=miri+rubin&amp;qid=1787824144&amp;sprefix=%2Caps%2C186&amp;sr=8-4\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon UK</a></li><li>Book - The Middle Ages: A Very Short Introduction:&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.amazon.co.uk/Middle-Ages-Short-Introduction-Introductions/dp/0199697299/ref=sr_1_3?crid=NL55SFLRZ1PW&amp;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.Ae6zoaVxWz8Q2wSSK6Lb3qMMg9kfz46dkReCX6SaLy-38Sk2d5FNdQ5ZyPaSFZftfEmVALDf2sadgoWgon73ld2PNfkLxG2QmnovKrgmZlhOpxC3TAzWk4b5YzP68ry0k5KwZOHn10BytzsimXOxQDi-hnAfzKfj1xYTuzO8XyV8eDEyfePofv5z8qQ4Uxs5mPvhpMscinvMH5k-XVtSGnwkxkXRYth3Fkz0wB91-_o.JmO-M6_nG9hCVwsCmwCJVydiMONQzxJHrfiY9XYfD0k&amp;dib_tag=se&amp;keywords=miri+rubin&amp;qid=1787824144&amp;sprefix=%2Caps%2C186&amp;sr=8-3\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon UK</a></li><li>Book - Charity and Community in Medieval Cambridge:&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.amazon.co.uk/Charity-Community-Medieval-Cambridge-Studies/dp/0521893984\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon UK</a></li><li><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annales_school\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Annales Scholes</a></li><li>Podcast - Our life in the classics with Mary Beard:&nbsp;<a href=\"https://open.spotify.com/episode/0GSUN8HCfnQaI8sjGPRMLx?si=TAIBRRHhQrOwcbRRtdALNQ\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Spotify</a></li><li>Readings - Oxford University Press -&nbsp;<a href=\"https://global.oup.com/academic/content/series/v/very-short-introductions-vsi/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Very Short Introductions</a></li><li>Project -&nbsp;<a href=\"https://euqu.eu/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The European Qur’an</a></li></ul><p><br></p><p><strong>Follow</strong></p><p><br></p><ul><li>Miri Rubin <a href=\"https://uk.linkedin.com/in/miri-rubin-85910a27\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">LinkedIn</a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.qmul.ac.uk/history/people/academic-staff/profiles/rubinmiri.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Queen Mary University of London</a></li><li><a href=\"https://www.linkedin.com/in/ilana-bet-el-5a5bb78?originalSubdomain=be\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ilana Bet-El</a></li><li>Instagram&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/women_leaders_podcast/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">@women_leaders_podcast</a></li><li>Listen to this episode on our&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiAEHRwzx19sgFbvKxjVQQQ\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube channel</a></li><li>Our partner European Leadership Network&nbsp;<a href=\"https://twitter.com/@theELN\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter</a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.linkedin.com/company/european-leadership-network-for-multilateral-nuclear-disarmament-and-non-proliferation\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">LinkedIn</a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/europeanleadershipnetwork\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook</a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.europeanleadershipnetwork.org/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">website</a></li></ul><p><br></p><p><strong>Credits</strong></p><p><br></p><ul><li>Production:&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.linkedin.com/in/florence-ferrando-8ab809a7/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Florence Ferrando</a></li><li>Music: Let Good Times Roll, RA from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!):&nbsp;<a href=\"https://uppbeat.io/t/ra/let-good-times-roll\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">https://uppbeat.io/t/ra/let-good-times-roll</a>License code: ZXIIIJUU2ISPZIJT</li></ul>","author_name":"Women Leaders - European Leadership Network"}
