While the admirable Ms Pelicot has become a modern heroine, the two stories have forced a strong focus upon a core common reality: women remain the ultimate objects, to be subjugated by men.</p><p><br></p><p>Ms Pelicot, the survivor of multiple rapes while rendered unconscious by her husband, recovered her own agency by refusing to remain anonymous, and by demanding that shame shift to the other side, to the perpetrators, to&nbsp;the men who raped her. The survivors of the Epstein abuse have not been so lucky: attention has been largely upon the powerful and famous men involved in this long running story of rape and abuse of minors, of young underage women.</p><p><br></p><p>Many women, and men, feel deep outrage about both these appalling events, but it isn’t always easy to talk about them. However, Katrin Bennhold of the New York Times and Elisa Braun of Euractiv, both senior investigative reporters and experienced journalists, explain so much about how these stories are reported, and express measures of disgust that enhance our own deep-felt emotions in the face of these criminal misogynistic abuses.</p><p>A fascinating, flowing and necessary discussion.</p><p><br></p><p>This episode was recorded on 19 February 2026</p><p><br></p><p><strong>Chapters</strong></p><ul><li>Contrasting stories: Pelicot vs. Epstein</li><li>Civil courage and accountability</li><li>When Justice is denied</li><li>Investigative journalism: trust and trauma</li><li>Conspiracy theories and institutional trust</li></ul><p><br></p><p><strong>Mentions</strong></p><ul><li>The World newsletter -&nbsp;<a href=\"https://static.nytimes.com/email-content/WOR_sample.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Times</a></li><li>The Rapporteur newsletter -&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.euractiv.com/topics/rapporteur/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Euractiv</a></li><li>Gisèle Pelicot’s&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hymn-Life-Shame-Change-Sides/dp/184792896X\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">book</a></li><li><a href=\"https://youtu.be/qGE9EduscqU?si=J3rCrq6Lwe7iPfDS](https://youtu.be/qGE9EduscqU?si=J3rCrq6Lwe7iPfDS\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Congressional hearing on Epstein files </a></li><li>Grooming girls in&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/02/world/europe/reckoning-starts-in-britain-on-abuse-of-girls.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Rotherham</a>&nbsp;by Katrin Bennhold</li><li><a href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/03/world/epstein-files-russia-ukraine-venezuela.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Epstein files 101</a>&nbsp;with Matt Goldstein</li><li><a href=\"https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/feb/06/jeffrey-epstein-scandal-politics-mass-abuse-women-girls\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Marina Hyde</a>&nbsp;on the Epstein files</li></ul><p><strong>Follow</strong></p><ul><li>Katrin Bennhold&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.linkedin.com/in/katrin-bennhold-70b25721/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">LinkedIn</a></li><li>Elisa Braun&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.linkedin.com/in/elisa-braun-b62a6978/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">LinkedIn</a></li><li><a href=\"https://www.linkedin.com/in/ilana-bet-el-5a5bb78?originalSubdomain=be\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ilana Bet-El</a></li><li>Instagram&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/women_leaders_podcast/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">@women_leaders_podcast</a></li><li>Listen this episode on our&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiAEHRwzx19sgFbvKxjVQQQ\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube channel</a></li><li>Our partner European Leadership Network&nbsp;<a href=\"https://twitter.com/@theELN\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter</a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.linkedin.com/company/european-leadership-network-for-multilateral-nuclear-disarmament-and-non-proliferation\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">LinkedIn</a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/europeanleadershipnetwork\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook</a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.europeanleadershipnetwork.org/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">website</a></li></ul><p><strong>Credits</strong></p><ul><li>Production:&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.linkedin.com/in/florence-ferrando-8ab809a7/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Florence Ferrando</a></li><li>Music: Let Good Times Roll, RA from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!):&nbsp;<a href=\"https://uppbeat.io/t/ra/let-good-times-roll\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">https://uppbeat.io/t/ra/let-good-times-roll</a>License code: ZXIIIJUU2ISPZIJT</li></ul>","author_name":"Women Leaders - European Leadership Network"}
