Houman Harouni is a practice-based theorist of culture and education. He is a lecturer at Harvard University, where he teaches a wildly popular and singular course called Transforming Systems: Leadership for the New. In this conversation we talked about a condition for learning and for creating change that is at once simple and demanding: being in touch with reality. What does that mean? Why is it so common to disengage from what's really in front of us and lock ourselves inside lies and illusions? How do you instigate change in a culture that is often managed and unconsciously organized by obsolete ideas and narratives? We talked about the wisdom of contradiction, about his formative years, about the book he always goes back to, and about what it takes to move away from abstractions and actually try new things.
