On the afternoon of November 17, 2013, at Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas, 32-year-old American freediver Nicholas Mevoli became the first in his sport to die in an international competition. He died while attempting to set an American record at the Vertical Blue competition at Dean's Blue Hole in the Bahamas.
