Fifty years ago, Armistead Maupin’s “Tales of the City” began as a serial in the San Francisco Chronicle. Unlike traditional journalism that held tightly to the truth, Maupin “tamper(ed) with the facts,” as he fictionalized his daily life in San Francisco and created patchwork portraits of the colorful characters around him. In the final part of our three-part series on Queer Literature, IFQT! Producer Eric Eubank chats with Armistead Maupin to discuss how his daily serial exploded into a series of novels and award-winning television series, why he can’t separate himself from his queer identity, and the brand new ways he’s telling his story at 82 years old.
