Dr Cara Ocobock is an evolutionary anthropology encyclopaedia, an enthusiastic academic, and an incredibly engaging listen.</p><p><br></p><p>In this episode, Dr Cara helps us to understand some of the interactions between our physiology, our evolution and our environments. In Cara’s work with reindeer herders in Finland, she explores physiological and behavioural mechanisms required to cope and adapt to extreme climates and activity. We discuss her findings into brown adipose tissue (BAT or brown fat), metabolic health, male/female differences, the potential drivers of metabolically healthy obesity, and the role of oestrogen in the body (spoiler: gents - you need this too!)</p><p><br></p><p>Find Cara:</p><p><a href=\"cocobock@nd.edu\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">cocobock@nd.edu</a></p><p>‘Cara Ocobock’ <a href=\"https://twitter.com/caraocobock?lang=en\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter</a>, <a href=\"https://bsky.app/profile/caraocobock.bsky.social\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Bluesky</a>, Threads</p><p>Cara also has a podcast of her own disseminating innovative research in the field - <a href=\"https://open.spotify.com/show/6HKQYlMb4WCQWHQ897LJKZ?si=c2ec59dba9f34087\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sausage of Science</a></p><p><br></p><p>----------------------------------------------------------------------</p><p><br></p><p>Mentioned in this podcast:</p><p>Jeremy DeSilva</p><p>Milford Wolpuff</p><p>Herman Pontzer</p><p>University of Lapland</p><p>University of Oulu</p><p><br></p><p>Studies mentioned in this podcast:</p><p><a href=\"https://www.nature.com/articles/386457a0 \" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Maximal sustained energy budgets in humans and animals</a></p><p><a href=\"https://academic.oup.com/emph/article/10/1/400/6668286 \" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Commentary - fat but fit…and cold?</a></p><p><br></p><p>More of Cara’s work:</p><p><a href=\"https://anthrosource.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/aman.13392 \" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Human Energy Expenditure in Anthropology and Beyond</a></p><p><a href=\"https://www.annualreviews.org/doi/abs/10.1146/annurev-anthro-052721-085858 \" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Human Bodies in Extreme Environments</a></p><p><a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37345289/ \" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Human cold adaptation: An unfinished agenda v2.0</a></p><p><a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35443705/ \" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Brown adipose tissue thermogenesis among a small sample of reindeer herders from sub-Arctic Finland</a></p><p><a href=\"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33797824/ \" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Between a rock and a cold place: Neanderthal biocultural cold adaptations</a></p><p><br></p><p>----------------------------------------------------------------------</p><p>Want to watch this on video? <a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDpVgBgbtgoNBz3sRQauH5w\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Subscribe on YouTube</strong></a></p><p><br></p><p><strong>Instagram</strong> <a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/degrees_of_health/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;@degreesofhealth&nbsp;</a></p><p><strong>Tik Tok </strong>@degrees_of_health</p><p><br></p><p><a href=\"https://www.canva.com/design/DAF6uea0cwE/S6IFQR7g0IoRiQiRkAIDyA/view?utm_content=DAF6uea0cwE&amp;utm_campaign=designshare&amp;utm_medium=link&amp;utm_source=viewer\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Disclaimer</a></p>","author_name":"Benjamin Hopkins"}
