It is the first volume in his <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Tower_(series)\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Dark Tower</em></a> series. <em>The Gunslinger</em> was first published in 1982 as a <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fix-up\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">fix-up</a> novel, joining five short stories that had been published between 1978 and 1981. King substantially revised the novel in 2003; this version has remained in print ever since, with the subtitle \"RESUMPTION\". The story centers <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_Deschain\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Roland Deschain</a>, the last <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunslinger\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">gunslinger</a>, who has been chasing his adversary, \"the <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randall_Flagg\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">man in black</a>,\" for many years. The novel fuses <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_fiction\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Western fiction</a> with <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasy_fiction\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">fantasy</a>, <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">science fiction</a>, and <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horror_fiction\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">horror</a>, following Roland's trek through a vast desert and beyond in search of the man in black.
