''Right now, over 2,300 adults with an intellectual disability are being cared for at home by a parent in their 70s, and more than 500 by a parent in their 80s, with no housing plan and no clear pathway from the State. Many of these families are right across Mayo and the West, often carrying this alone with nowhere to turn. The National Assembly is a free, national gathering where families come together to hear what the campaign has achieved so far, understand exactly what we are asking Government for, and meet other families facing the same fight.''
This morning on the Tommy Marren Show, Tommy was joined by Sarah Roarty, co-founder of Before We Die, an advocacy group established by parents and siblings of adults with an intellectual disability. Before We Die, seeks to answer the question ''who will provide the care our children needs when we are no longer able to provide it ourselves?'' Sarah spoke about Before We Die's campaign, to lobby the government to fund and deliver residential services to care for adults with intellectual disabilities, after their parents have passed away.
