He says great coaches share three traits: a long-term vision they stick to, authenticity, and making players and staff better through relationships. After being fired by the Dutch federation in 2014–15, he learned to self-reflect, protect his plan, and grow. Taking over India’s women in 2017, he built performance by working backward from an Olympic vision, setting behavior-based goals, confronting players with consequences, and building confidence through small steps. He emphasizes player decision-making via questioning and psychological safety, and describes a Tokyo turning point where he pushed players to take responsibility, refocus on task over outcome, and use ideas like “circles of attention” to stay in the moment, aiming to inspire a broader legacy beyond medals.

If you would like to send us any feedback or if you know a great coach, who has a unique story to share, then we would love to hear from you, please contact us at thegreatcoachespodcast@gmail.com or contact us through our website thegreatcoachespodcast.com
","author_name":"Paul Barnett & Jim Woolfrey"}
