Sean Quirk on Building Culture Through Relationships, Storytelling, and Accountability
There is no algorithm for leadership. So we ask the world's great coaches how they do it.
Sean Quirk discusses coaching lessons from mentors like Paul Adams and Keith Bugbee, emphasizing that great coaches prioritize relationships, active listening, and long-term player development. He describes taking over a young Endicott program by writing each player a personal letter and questionnaire, building a “family” culture that helped elevate the team’s national standing. Quirk shares formative experiences including open-heart surgery at 12, becoming a lacrosse goalie, and the impact of losing the 1995 NCAA championship on resilience and coaching perspective. He explains his use of storytelling, defines thriving culture as respect, trust, and accountability, and highlights optimism as a catalyst for change. Quirk reflects on leading the Boston Cannons to a 2020 bubble championship, what he seeks in support staff, and Endicott’s leadership program built around communication, commitment, confidence, and character, aiming for a legacy of positively changed lives.
