In Royal Deeside, where the River Dye runs down off the moor beneath the granite tor of Clachnaben, sits Glen Dye - a vast Aberdeenshire estate that has been in the Gladstone family since the 1840s. When Charlie and Caroline Gladstone took it on in 1990, swapping London careers in music and design for the glen, the houses had no heating, the place was deep in debt, and the whole estate was, by Charlie's own account, on its knees.
