A recently published patent describes technology that could allow players to tap a credit card, smartphone, or gift card directly against a PlayStation controller to transfer payment information to the console. The concept could make buying games, DLC, and other digital content faster by reducing the need to manually enter payment details. The technology could also be used for transferring account information and other data between devices. A recently published patent describes a system that could identify natural breaks in gameplay—such as loading screens, completed missions, cutscenes or the end of boss fights—and temporarily pause the experience to display promotional content. Players could then receive additional uninterrupted playtime after viewing an ad. While the patent offers a glimpse at how Microsoft is thinking about ad-supported gaming, it does not confirm that the system will be introduced on Xbox or PC.
