Theodosia Burr Alston was the daughter of former U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr and the wife of Joseph Alston, who became governor of South Carolina. Highly educated and closely connected to some of the most prominent political figures of early America, Theodosia lived a life marked by both privilege and tragedy. In 1812, following the devastating death of her ten-year-old son, Aaron Burr Alston, Theodosia planned a journey to New York to reunite with her father. On December 30, 1812, she departed Georgetown, South Carolina, aboard the schooner Patriot. The ship never reached its destination, and Theodosia was never seen again. No definitive explanation for the disappearance of the Patriot has ever been established. Over the years, theories involving storms, shipwrecks and piracy have surrounded the mystery. Theodosia's fate remains unknown, transforming her disappearance into one of the most intriguing maritime mysteries of 19th-century America.
