He didn't particularly enjoy getting beaten up by everyone at first, but he kept going. Today, Sam is a third degree Black Belt, teaches at ARMA Jiu Jitsu in London and runs Surrey Martial Arts Club alongside his dad and childhood friend Dave.

We talk about the family connection running throughout Sam's Jiu Jitsu journey, from his dad and brother to a wider family filled with martial artists, and how something he initially did at weekends eventually became his full-time life.

At the heart of Sam's approach is curiosity. He loves understanding techniques, transitions and systems, testing ideas and finding the holes in his own knowledge. After spending much of his career training in the Gi, being caught with a No Gi technique he didn't understand sparked another period of learning and helped lead him towards the No Gi game he now loves.

We explore why being caught or beaten doesn't have to be a failure. Whether it's a tough training round or competition, Sam wants to understand what happened, learn the system and make sure he's better prepared next time. For him, competition is another lesson - an opportunity to test yourself and expose the areas that need work.

Sam also shares his own competition journey, including British titles, travelling internationally when far fewer UK athletes were doing so, medalling at the 2016 Europeans and returning to competition after a long period affected by a serious back injury.

That injury leads us into an important conversation about longevity and identity. At one point Sam's back became so painful he couldn't walk, but being forced away from training also taught him something significant: Jiu Jitsu is a huge part of his life, but it isn't who he is.

We talk about strength and conditioning, returning from injury, avoiding burnout and having a fulfilling life away from the mats.

And ultimately, after more than two decades, Sam is still hungry to learn. He wants to keep competing while his body allows it, continue testing himself against high-level grapplers and then put even more energy into developing the next generation.

Stay curious, keep learning and remember that Jiu Jitsu can be an important part of your life without having to define your entire identity.

Topics:

• 20+ years of Jiu Jitsu

• ARMA Jiu Jitsu

• Surrey Martial Arts Club

• Family and martial arts

• Third degree Black Belt

• Gi and No Gi

• Curiosity and learning

• Coaching

• Competition

• 2016 Europeans

• Training with high-level grapplers

• Injury and recovery

• Strength and conditioning

• Jiu Jitsu and identity

• Longevity

• Community

• Developing the next generation

FOLLOW SAM

Sam on Instagram:

https://www.instagram.com/samgibsonbjj/

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

ARMA Jiu Jitsu

https://www.instagram.com/armabjj/

OFFICIAL PODCAST PARTNER

SoulTaker Fightwear:

https://www.instagram.com/soultakerfightwear/

WELLNESS & RECOVERY PARTNER

THRIVE Hyperbaric:

https://thrivehyperbaric.com/jiu-jitsu?utm_source=jiujitsulou

Supporting my recovery and return to the mats, with wellness and recovery technology for athletes and opportunities for Jiu Jitsu academies.

FOLLOW JIU JITSU LOU

YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@JiuJitsuLou

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jiu.jitsu.lou

TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jiu.jitsu.lou

JIU JITSU LOU is a UK BJJ Podcast hosted by Lou Temlett.

PRODUCTION

Produced by Kerr Mathieson of Audio Outsource

https://www.audiooutsource.co.uk/

MUSIC

Maleki Ram - Just A Little Boy

Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.

https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
","author_name":"Lou Temlett"}
