Every hunter has a vision of how a trip will unfold from the country they'll explore and the animals they'll pursue to the memories they'll bring home. Sometimes however, the biggest lessons come from the moments when everything doesn't go according to plan.
In this episode, I share the story of my 2021 solo mule deer hunt in Montana and the unexpected challenges that came with it. What began as a trip filled with excitement and high expectations quickly became a lesson in doing your own homework, trusting your instincts, and realizing that things aren't always what they seem. After arriving in Montana, I discovered that the reality of the situation was far different from what had been promised. A decision had to be made- stay the course or change everything and try to salvage the hunt I had traveled so far for. The days that followed tested my patience and determination as I searched for the buck I came to Montana to find.
One moment in the field served as a powerful reminder that when it comes to firearms, complacency can have devastating consequences. A situation that could have ended in tragedy reinforced the importance of always respecting your equipment, following safe practices, and never assuming that a bad outcome can't happen.
This is a story about disappointment, perseverance, second chances and the lessons that can come from a hunt long after the trigger is pulled.
