My guest this week is Evan Minsker (Critic/Journalist for Pitchfork & the heart behind the amazing punk newsletter See/Saw) who (...wait for it...) picked a very punk film: Autonomy And Deliberation, by a very Australian AND very punk band The UV Race. And although it has never been publicly released, the director and the band let us watch it so we can discuss it for you! Got it yet?!?!?
We talk about why the finished film never reached eyes outside of a few friends in Australia, Evan’s early punk rock roots, the fear of being reviewed on Pitchfork, not being able to get into the venue to see Fugazi and Scratch Acid (so you listen to them outside), the amazing punk scenes and punk labels happening all around the world right now, alternative DIY spaces, being the oldest person at the show (at age 27), Turnstile, how The UV Race has no wikipedia page/follows no one back on social media/embraces broken web links, the poetry of front man Marcus, the mystery surrounding the director Johann Rashid and his film inluences as a child which influenced his filmmaking, Courtney Barnett, the self-depricating tone of the film, the cameos from members of Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Dick Diver & Total Control, the soundtrack for the unreleased film, blowing the band money at the Greyhound Track, how the structure of the film is bascially The Blues Brothers (\"I’ve got to get the band back together\"), how the film is built upon the band’s inner workings/language and sense of humor, Marcus' other band Hot Tubs Time Machine, their also unseen Sci-Fi followup: THE UV RACE DISGRACE SPACE, and we pitch a new film to complete their filmic trilogy.
